A memorial service will be held for Michael Brattain, Ph.D., at 4 p.m. Friday in the Eppley Science Hall Auditorium.

Dr. Brattain, an Eppley Institute professor and associate director for basic research in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, died March 5 at the age of 68.

A nationally recognized leader in cancer research, Dr. Brattain’s laboratory focused on the characterization of autocrine growth factors that played key roles in the regulation of cancer cell growth and dissemination. He was continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute since 1978 and received a prestigious MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Time) Award from the NCI in 2007.

Since joining the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in 2007, Dr. Brattain played a key role in reorganization of cancer center programs, core facilities and faculty recruitment, said Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, who added that Dr. Brattain also devoted significant time and effort to mentoring junior faculty and training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
