A members-only preview of the new exhibit "Sheila Hicks: Material Voices" will be held on June 4.

As part of the Passport Partners Program, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in numerous free exhibition openings, art classes, family activities, and presentations offered by the Joslyn Art Museum throughout the year. There are many opportunities this summer to experience all the Joslyn has to offer, including a few here on campus.

Members Preview

June 4
Joslyn Art Museum

From 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., show a UNMC/Nebraska Medicine ID for admission to the members-only preview of the new exhibit “Sheila Hicks: Material Voices.” At 2 p.m., Karin Campbell, Joslyn’s Phil Willson Curator of Contemporary Art, will present a talk in the gallery. From 6-8 p.m., members are invited to a private lecture and evening reception celebrating “Material Voices,” followed by exhibition viewing, complimentary light hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. Pastels en Plein Air

In the spirit of plein air painters, members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community can experience pastel drawing outdoors. During this four-week art class taught by Rob Sykes, 16 people will learn to draw from observation, layering and combining colors, using pastels as their medium. The class will meet from 6-8 p.m. Reservations are required, and space is limited. If interested, please email Emily Lasky.

KickstART Saturdays

Joslyn Art Museum
From 10 a.m. – noon, these free events entertain and engage families with hands-on activities, performances, and demonstrations. On June 11, the activity centers around 3-D art making celebrating author and illustrator Marla Frazee’s book “Roller Coaster.” On Aug. 13, take the family to learn about the newest exhibit, “Sheila Hicks: Material Voices.”

Joslyn Noon Presentation

Drawing on global weaving traditions, the history of painting and sculpture, graphic design, and architecture, Sheila Hicks (b. 1934, Hastings) has redefined the role of fiber in art. At noon on Tuesday July 12, join Campbell for an illustrated overview of the exhibition. Reservations required. Please email Lasky.

Joslyn Art Museum
The museum will offer a tour at 5:30 p.m. of the “Highlights of the Permanent Collection.” Following the tour, a curator gallery talk of “Sheila Hicks: Material Voices” will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Light appetizers will be served.
