Beginning June 1, Parking Services will implement use of a mechanical gate to improve safety and security in a portion of Lot 3.

The underground parking lot, located just south of the intersection of 44th and Dewey streets, is used by emergency room patients and visitors, as well as physicians.

The gate will separate the existing Lot 3 into two distinct sections. The front portion will remain open to patients and visitors who self-park, or select valet services. Physicians will have access beyond the gate using a key fob.

“Patients occasionally have difficulty navigating the garage, or finding the correct stairwell to the emergency department,” said Julie Lazure, vice president of operations for acute care at Nebraska Medicine. “This will eliminate such problems and ensure that our patients more easily find their way to the ED.”

In the coming weeks, motorists in Lot 3 will notice improved signage, and, initially, a security officer will be placed at the gate to assist motorists during the transition.
