Gloden Carlson named chief compliance officer

Sarah Gloden Carlson, J.D., began work as UNMC’s new chief compliance officer in July.

In the position, Gloden Carlson will oversee compliance with all governmental rules and regulations on matters as varied as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance to compliance with National Institutes of Health research directives.

Gloden Carlson was formerly the director of development for the College of Nursing through the University of Nebraska Foundation.

“Sarah comes to this position with a strong background in compliance within academia, having worked previously as the director of academic affairs and state compliance officer for Nebraska for the Apollo Group from 2009 to 2013,” said Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Prior to that, Gloden Carlson was assistant dean and director of communications for University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law. Carlson received her J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with a lot of wonderful partners across the university system and beyond,” Gloden Carlson said. “It’s an exciting time for UNMC, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of it.

“The University of Nebraska in my estimation is the single greatest resource of our state,” she said. “And when you think about what happens in our most urban areas and our most rural communities, you can see the impact and influence of the university all across the state. And it’s exciting for me to be a part of helping to advance that good work.”

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., welcomed Gloden Carlson to campus.

“Because of the extensive and world-class education and research that takes place at UNMC, the role of the chief compliance officer is an important one,” Dr. Gold said. “Sarah brings impressive credentials to the position, and we are pleased to welcome her to our institution.”

“Sarah brings to the Compliance Office a diverse legal background, as well as years of experience in educational and regulatory compliance,” said Rick Spellman, J.D., associate general counsel health sciences for the University of Nebraska. “Please welcome her to campus.”

Dr. Davies thanked the members of the search committee — Spellman, Deb Thomas, Barb Brey, Sharon Welna and Harris Frankel, M.D.

“We were very fortunate to have had a great pool of candidates and the participation of faculty and staff in the process was very valuable,” he said.

Dr. Davies also thanked Tara Scrogin, J.D., for serving in an interim role during the search.

“Tara worked tirelessly and selflessly on behalf of UNMC and we owe her a debt of gratitude for her dedication,” he said.
