Student privacy paramount at UNMC

Confidentiality of student information is critically important. All faculty and staff must be aware of regulations related to appropriate release of student information.

The only student information that may be released without student permission is Directory Information (defined below) and then only if the student has not specifically restricted the release of this information. For example, release of student grades to newspapers, of financial aid information to national professional organizations, or of a reference for an individual student is prohibited without student permission.

Directory Information:

  • Student name
  • Local address
  • Permanent address
  • Telephone listings
  • Year at the university
  • Dates of attendance
  • Academic college and major field of study
  • Enrollment status (e.g. undergraduate or graduate; full-time or part-time)
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Degrees, honors and awards received
  • Most recent educational agency or institution attended

Before releasing Directory Information on an individual student you must verify that the student has not requested their data not be released (Set a FERPA Flag). You can do so by checking in PeopleSoft/MyRecords on the Career Program Plan page or contacting Janet McLaughlin, UNMC registrar, to verify a student’s status. You also may run the PeopleSoft query called NBMSR_STDNT_FERPA to identify the group of students who have restricted release of their information. If you need help in running the query or do not have access to this query, please contact Paulo Shila, UNMC PeopleSoft security officer.

The information below will be sent to students this week and on Sept. 1, Feb. 1, and June 1 for each year they are in school.

The federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) defines student rights relative to student information. FERPA requires that we notify you of your rights under this act. FERPA grants you the right to

  • inspect and review your educational record
  • seek to amend incorrect educational records
  • provide written consent before the university discloses personally identifiable information from your record except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent
  • limit the disclosure of directory information
