New leadership roles at Nebraska Medicine

Nebraska Medicine CEO Dan DeBehnke, M.D., has named Cory Shaw, current chief operating officer for Network and System Development and past CEO of UNMC Physicians, as chief strategy officer for the health system.

“Cory has made a tremendous impact on this campus for 20 years,” Dr. DeBehnke said. “He led UNMC Physicians through a complex integration process, which is a national model of success. His skill and knowledge will guide us into the future.”

As chief strategy officer, Shaw will continue the work of building partnerships across the region and here in Omaha. “As we strengthen our existing clinical programs and build new ones, we are finding new ways to connect our experts with patients who need their care,” Shaw said. “We have to find ways that are safe, efficient and convenient for patients wherever they live.”

There also are a number of new roles within clinical operations:

  • Matt Pospisil, vice president of operations at Nebraska Medicine – Bellevue, will add operational responsibility for Perioperative Services and work closely with Steve Lisco, M.D., professor and chair of anesthesiology at UNMC, as the co-chair of the Perioperative Executive Committee on the opening of the Fritch Surgery Center at the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, as well as the new off-site sterile processing center called the Integrated Service Center.
  • Theresa Franco, vice president of cancer operations, will add operational responsibility for radiology and work closely with Craig Walker, M.D., professor and chair of UNMD’s Department of Radiology, on radiology expansions at Village Pointe, Lauritzen Outpatient Center and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
  • Julie Lazure, vice president of acute care, will add operational responsibility of laboratory services and work alongside Steve Hinrichs, M.D., chairman of UNMC’s Pathology and Microbiology Department, on lab expansion at Village Pointe and the Lauritzen Outpatient Center.
  • Tom Macy, vice president of ambulatory clinics and clinical programs, will add operational responsibility for the Truhlsen Eye Institute and surgery specialty clinics, while working closely with Mike Sitorius, M.D., professor and chair of UNMC’s Family Medicine Department, and David W. Mercer, M.D., chairman of UNMC’s Department of Surgery, to drive clinic growth at Village Pointe and the Lauritzen Outpatient Center.

Pospisil, Franco, Lazure and Macy will report to Chief Operating Officer Dennis Bierle.

“Nebraska Medicine has proven in the last several years, you can’t succeed by sitting still,” Bierle said. “We have a number of gifted leaders who have just the skills we need to move ahead in each of these very important areas.”

The new roles are effective this week.
