Campus fitness center’s ribbon-cutting set for Monday

The grand opening of the renovated Center for Healthy Living will be held from 3 – 5 p.m. Monday on the lawn north of the Student Life Center, and to mark the occasion, the Center for Healthy Living is offering a free month’s use of the fitness club facilities (from Oct. 10-Nov. 10) to all members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community.

“We are very excited about the redesigned Center for Healthy Living and very thankful to the donors who made the renovation possible,” said Jayme Nekuda, Ph.D., associate director of human resources. “I’d like to encourage all employees of UNMC and Nebraska Medicine to take advantage of the free month to check out all the new equipment, additional fitness class offerings and improved facilities the new Center for Healthy Living has to offer.”

Longtime UNMC supporters Ruth and Bill Scott are the lead donors on the project, which was initiated by the UNMC Student Senate.

Speakers at the event will include John Scott, director of the Ruth and Bill Scott Family Foundation; Nick Heiser, M.D., a UNMC alum and faculty member; Morgan Johnson, student senator; Dr. Nekuda; and UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

The dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Self-guided tours follow the ceremony inside the Center for Healthy Living.

The event also will feature healthy snacks, free chair massages, workout demos, music from DJ Laci and fitness-themed prizes. Free UNMC workout towels will be given out as long as supplies last.

The UNMC Bookstore also was part of this renovation project. Be sure to stop in during the grand opening event to see the new space. The bookstore sells branded apparel and merchandise, and text books. Credit cards are accepted.
