Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.
Today we meet:

  • Name: Joseph McTygue
  • Hometown: Kearney, Neb.
  • Program/Year: Third semester nursing student

What sparked your interest in your chosen career path?
A lot of my family members, including my mom and older sister, are nurses, and they inspired me to go into the nursing field. I really like how you can do a variety of things with a nursing degree and how there are many specialties to choose from. Nursing also allows you to deal with different aspects of health care, which is what really interests me.

List three songs on your playlist.

  • “Head Over Boots,” Jon Pardi
  • “Stay A Little Longer,” Brothers Osborne
  • “May We All,” Florida Georgia Line

Your favorite study snack is:
Cheez-its would have to be my favorite study snack, along with some SweetTarts every once in a while.

Your favorite app is:

Snapchat is probably my favorite app. It’s a fun way to communicate with friends and family.

Three things people may not know about you.

  • I have a cat named Goose.
  • I enjoy refinishing old furniture. I actually redid the table and chairs I currently use at my house.
  • I enjoy traveling to different countries. I have gone to Lima, Peru, to help with mobile clinics in my freshman year of college, and I am going to Beijing, China, for an international experience next semester.
