How I fell in love with medicine:
When I was on a rural rotation to David City, Neb., I loved talking to the patients and practicing medicine inside a renovated little house in Shelby, Neb. My preceptor, Gerald Luckey, M.D., was the best example of humanistic medicine.

Three things people may not know about me:

• My first college major was elementary education.
• I earned varsity letters in high school track, tennis and softball. My dad was my summer softball coach, and we made it to the national tournament.
• I am the first generation of my family to earn a bachelor’s degree and the only health care professional.
