UNMC students Tuesday recognized two outstanding teachers with the 2003-04 Golden Apple Award. James Booth, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology, received the award from the Class of 2006, while the Class of 2007 posthumously recognized Michael Dalton, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy.

The Gold Apple Awards are given to faculty members for outstanding teaching.

The UNMC chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) sponsored the event in the Durham Research Center.

In selecting Dr. Booth for the award, students cited his organizational skills, approachability and willingness to answer questions, in and outside of class. Each year, he also organizes a microbiology review to help students study for their board exams.

While accepting his award, Dr. Booth unfolded a sheet of paper, saying he had some people to thank, then continued to unfold the paper until he revealed a sign saying “Class of 2006.”

Dr. Dalton’s wife Robyn accepted the award on his behalf. Dr. Dalton died Sept. 1, 2004.

“Dr. Dalton’s teaching put a little bit of him in all of us,” said Kristin Schlautman, who worked with him in the lab in her first year of college. “He always treated me with total respect and patience.”
