Organizers hope skating event brings internal inquiries

Internal medicine physicians Kara Markin, M.D., and Chelsea Navarrette, M.D., are hosting a social skating event called “Proud to be General Internal Medicine” from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the UNMC Ice Rink and the Sorrell Center.

The event is one of several being hosted this week to allow medical students to meet internal medicine faculty and staff, have fun and learn more about the field of general internal medicine. There will be pizza from 5-6 p.m. and a prize giveaway at 6 p.m.

“We hope to raise awareness and grow enthusiasm about the opportunities in general internal medicine, as well as make our students aware of a potential shortage in primary care physicians,” Dr. Navarrette said.

Internal medicine physicians take care of adults with minor and complex illnesses and conditions. They also are considered “quarterbacks” since they coordinate a patient’s care with specialists. The need for primary care will become more critical in the next 10 to 20 years, particularly to care for Nebraska’s growing aging population and those in rural and underserved areas.

Each year about 25 of 130 UNMC medical students choose internal medicine as a practice.

The event is being funded by a $1,000 grant from the Society of General Internal Medicine based in Washington, D.C.
