Those eager to get a view of this year’s Omaha Symphony ASID Designer Showhouse before the designers transform the house will have that opportunity between 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23. The “Sneak Peek” event is open to the general public, with a $5 contribution to the symphony payable at the door. Children under 10 will be admitted free.
The Omaha Symphony ASID Designer Showhouse is a long-standing Omaha tradition. For 30 years, the Omaha Symphony Guild and the Nebraska-Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers have joined forces to create The Showhouse. Proceeds from the fundraising event support a wide variety of Omaha Symphony Guild youth music education programs across Nebraska and western Iowa.
Each year, the two organizations establish a design theme and choose a home to showcase the best examples of interior design and the latest trends in decor. This year’s theme, “Harmony for Hope,” sets the tone for this year’s very special house. The Showhouse chosen this year is the Potter’s House at 428 S. 38th St. Potter’s House is a safe and comfortable dwelling for families of patients undergoing treatments and recovering from organ transplants at The Nebraska Medical Center.
The house also serves as a temporary residence for doctors and nurses training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/The Nebraska Medical Center as participants of the International Strategic Partnership Program started by Nizar Mamdani, Executive Director of the Office of International Healthcare Services.
Built in 1892, this mansion situated in the Omaha’s historic Gold Coast was once home to a local prominent businessman, Charles Dietz. In 1989, it was purchased by UNMC and currently provides lodging for up to 11 families at a time.
For $25, as part of a Signature Salute, participants in the “Sneak Peek” will be able to sign their names and have their signatures displayed along with other patrons as supporters of the 2005 Symphony ASID Designer Showhouse. The signatures will be listed in the Showhouse program magazine. The renovated and redesigned 2005 Showhouse will be open to the public April 16 through May 8.
