The medical center community is invited to attend today’s groundbreaking ceremony for the new Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning. The building, which will be located at the southeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets, will transform the way health professionals learn new skills and acquire new knowledge.

The 2:30 p.m. ceremony also will recognize the donors, including those whose names will grace the multi-level facility.

The $118.9 million Global Center will house UNMC’s iEXCELâ„  (Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning) program and expose students to interprofessional clinical simulation training exercises, surgical skills training and realistic environments through virtual and augmented reality, holographic and visualization techniques.

It also will house the National Center for Health Security and Biopreparedness. Funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the center will enable UNMC to teach federal health care personnel procedures in treating highly infectious diseases.

The ceremony will be held in the Truhlsen Events Center inside the Sorrell Center. Speakers include UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., Gov. Pete Ricketts, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert and University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, Ph.D., along with representatives from Nebraska Medicine, the University of Nebraska Foundation, NU Board of Regents and the health care industry.

Following the ceremony, the campus is invited to attend an open house of the iEXCEL Visualization Hub (Sorrell Center, Room 1012) and interact with such equipment as the iWALL and 3-D CAD wall, both of which will move into the new building.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be livestreamed here. The stream can be accessed at the time of the event. If you have any technical issues with the stream, please call the ITS Video Services trouble number at 402-559-8090.

The groundbreaking ceremony also will be livestreamed on UNMC’s Facebook page, with additional social content surrounding the event on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
