UNMC hosts Science Festival events

The UNMC Omaha campus will play host to several activities tied to this year’s Nebraska Science Festival.

Events include:

SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt
April 20-29
This year’s Nebraska Science Festival is bringing back a statewide “SciFest Social Media Scavenger Hunt” for all ages. Simply take a picture of the item in the clue and post it to Facebook (comments section), Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #nescifest. Each day, one winner will be chosen at random for a SciFest T-shirt. Winners will be contacted through direct messaging.

Pluripotent Stem Cell and Adult Stem Cell Therapy Issues and Solutions
April 21, noon-1 p.m.
Sorrell Center, Room 2018 (parking available in Lot 22)
The Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures hosts a free lunch-and-learn with Mahendra Rao, M.D., Ph.D., internationally known for his research involving human embryonic stem cells and other somatic stem cells.

Total Solar Eclipse Lunch-and-Learn
April 24, noon-1 p.m.
Sorrell Center, Room 1005 (parking available in Lot 36)
On Aug. 21, the lunar shadow will cross Nebraska, marking the day of the Great American Eclipse. Join Denis Svechkarev, Ph.D., UNMC Pharmaceutical Science and member of the Omaha Astronomical Society, for a brief introduction to the eclipse basics, as well as an overview of local circumstances and safe observing tips. Solar glasses will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sustainability Expo
April 27, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Lower Aotrz Pavilion
The Sustainability Expo features multiple representatives from community/environmental organizations. Want to set up a rain barrel? Interested in a personal consultation on how you could incorporate active commuting into your lifestyle? Every wondered how they make biofuel from fryer grease? All these, and many more, will be available, along with free cookies, door prizes and more.

Inside Out
April 27, 8:30 p.m.
Bill and Ruth Scott Student Plaza
Free screening of the Academy Award-nominated film “Inside Out.” Bring blankets, lawn chairs and non-alcoholic refreshments. From 7-8 p.m., visit with representatives from The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska and learn more about improving access to behavioral health care across the state of Nebraska. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled.

EngAge Wellness Open House
April 29, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
730 S. 38th Ave.
UNMC’s EngAge Wellness is Omaha’s only medical fitness and whole-person wellness program for adults affiliated with a leading academic health sciences center. The center specializes in developing programs for people with chronic conditions.
