Conference will focus on modeling and simulation

UNMC and University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty, staff and students interested in modeling and simulation in the health sciences are encouraged to attend the 16th Annual Institute of Electronic and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Electro Information Technology, which is taking place May 14-17 in Lincoln at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Student Union-City Campus.

This new track, titled “Advances in Modeling and Simulation in the Health Sciences: Opportunities for Collaboration,” has been added to the IEEE conference this year and highlights the emerging area of modeling and simulation (M&S) within training and research.

On May 15, UNMC/UNO Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green, Ph.D., will be two of eight keynote speakers. Pamela Boyers, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for clinical simulation/iEXCELâ„ , and Beverly Seay, executive director for the Nebraska Applied Research Institute, are co-chairs of the Health Sciences track.

“Modeling and simulation is an emerging area of research in health sciences with many applications,” said Hamid Vakilzadian, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNL College of Engineering, and the event’s general chair. “It is used to guide decisions in medicine, especially considering uncertainty when designing treatment strategies, or training and preparing medical professionals in new approaches in surgery such as robotics. It is a safe way for training, educating and performing research in unknown and uncertain domains.”

“As health care adopts modeling and simulation to address patient safety and quality of care, our relationship with the many branches of engineering will be of vital importance,” Dr. Boyers said. “The new health care track in the IEEE conference offers the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCELâ„ ) and other UNMC initiatives many opportunities, including the forging of new relationships that will lead to deeper collaboration in training, research and product development.”

The health care track will include some engaging and innovative technical papers as well as panel sessions and keynote presentations.
