Inappropriate use of computer resources leads to arrest

On Tuesday (March 1), a workstation in the McGoogan Library of Medicine computing cluster was being used to view objectionable material, which is prohibited by federal law. Following established procedures, UNMC Campus Security contacted the Omaha Police Department and an arrest was made. The individual arrested was not affiliated with UNMC.

“As a state-assisted institution, the McGoogan Library of Medicine will continue its proactive efforts to serve Nebraska residents,” said Nancy Woelfl, Ph.D., director of the McGoogan Library. “Members of the community are welcome to contact or visit us if they need health-related information. Even though it is not our mission to provide general Internet access or services to the public, we do assume those who use our facilities and resources are using them appropriately until we have evidence to the contrary.”

Dr. Woelfl was interviewed Wednesday by several Omaha television and radio stations.
