Orthopaedic resident graduation events Friday

The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will recognize four graduating residents Friday.

The graduating residents and their chosen fellowships are:

  • Eric Bonness, M.D.: Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, Boston Shoulder Institute, Boston
  • Courtney Grimsrud, M.D.: Foot and Ankle Fellowship, University of Washington, Seattle
  • Paul Johnson, M.D.: Spine Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh
  • Andrew Kirkpatrick, M.D.: Hand Fellowship, University of Massachusetts, Worcester, Mass.

This year’s graduation ceremony, which is open to the campus, will include final oral presentations from the graduating residents, and will feature talks from prominent guest speakers including:

Sixth Annual Harold and Marian Andersen Lecturer:

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of the social news website Reddit, will present at 10:20 a.m. Friday with a speech titled, “The Promise of Internet.” Ohanian also is co-founder of Initialized Capital, a seed stage venture fund with more than $160 million under management and bestselling author of “Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed.”

Visiting Professor:
James Stannard, M.D., will present “Stand in the Door: Leadership and Life Lessons from the 82nd Airborne Division” at 11:10 a.m. Friday. Dr. Stannard is the Hansjörg Wyss Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine (MU) and serves as the medical director of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute. His practice focuses on the repair and reconstruction of dislocated knees through a combination of sports medicine and trauma surgical techniques as well as new preservation/biojoint techniques developed at MU. Dr. Stannard completed 10 years of active service with the U.S. Army including service as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Friday’s graduation events will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center’s fourth floor auditorium. The schedule of events will be:

  • 7:30-8:30 a.m. – Resident presentations
  • 8:30-9:30 a.m. – “Arthroplasty in Upper Extremity Trauma”
  • 9:30 -10:20 a.m. – Alumni updates and break
  • 10:20-11:10 a.m. – Alexis Ohanian, “The Promise of Internet”
  • 11:10-Noon – James Stannard, M.D., “Stand in the Door: Leadership and Life Lessons from the 82nd Airborne Division.”
