Search committee named for SAHP associate dean

College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., has appointed a search committee to replace Mary Haven, who has announced plans to step down as associate dean of UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions. Haven has agreed to serve through the end of June, or until a successor is found.

Patricia Hageman, Ph.D., program director and professor of physical therapy education, will chair the eight-member search committee, which is accepting nominations and applications. Committee members will include medical center faculty members, Jean Deupree, Ph.D., Karen Honeycutt, Timothy Moore, M.D., Karen Nichols, James Somers, Ph.D., James Wisecarver, M.D., Ph.D.; medical center allied health student, Katherine Wolfe; and a representative from The Nebraska Medical Center, Terry Paulsen.

SAHP is composed of 10 educational programs (clinical perfusion, cytotechnology, medical nutrition, medical technology, physical therapy, physician assistant, and radiography sciences technology education, which includes the divisions of nuclear medicine, radiation science, radiography and ultrasonography). SAHP, which has an average enrollment of 350 students, was established as a separate entity of the College of Medicine in 1972.

The associate dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the school and reports to the dean of the College of Medicine. SAHP is seeking a strong academic leader to build on the school’s traditions of excellence in teaching, distance learning, research and outreach to underserved populations.

The dean is responsible for providing leadership in planning, organizing, coordinating and directing the necessary resources to accomplish the goals and objectives of the school. The ideal candidate will have:


  • Exceptional leadership and vision;

  • Integrity, trustworthiness and reputation for honesty;
  • A commitment to recruit diverse faculty and students;
  • The ability to foster academic scholarship;
  • An appreciation for the importance of information technology and distance learning;
  • A master’s or earned doctorate in his/her specialty area or other relevant field;
  • Five years minimum experience within health sciences education within a university or college, preferably with demonstrated skills in administration, teaching, research and professional service;
  • Demonstrated involvement in state, regional and national professional activities.
