Making sense of CMMS – – The first in a weekly series

CMMS, the “Comparative Medicine Management System,” is a new computerized business management system that includes (1) on-line animal ordering and “up to the minute” invoice access via UNMC’s Research Support System (RSS); (2) electronic barcode census; (3) on-line Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP) enrollment via RSS and (4) OHSP training via Blackboard.

A key component of CMMS is the link between cost center and/or WBS numbers and active Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols. UNMC Today will provide weekly messages to help you understand the topic and how it impacts your research program. This week’s topic — What is bar code animal census and how does it work?

Questions:

1. What is bar code census?
2. How will it work?
3. What if I lose one of my cage cards?

Answers:

1. Each cage card will be imprinted with a barcode that is linked to database information including IACUC protocol number, PI, per diem rate and species.

2. A barcode card must be clearly visible on the front of each cage. Cards will be read with an electronic scanner. New cards, for cage breakdown, can be ordered and printed out in each facility. When cages are no longer in use (retired) the card MUST be deposited in the marked container in each facility so they can be “scanned out.”

3. If you do not deposit retired cards in the “scan out box” OR if the card is lost you need to contact the Comparative Medicine business office at 559-4034 to ensure that the card is removed from the system. Otherwise per diem charges will continue to accrue.
