Student spotlight: Jenny Shehan

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet Jenny Shehan, a fourth-year medical student.

  • Name: Jenny Shehan
  • Hometown: Omaha, Neb.
  • Program/Year: Medical, fourth year

What sparked my interest in my chosen career path?
My cousin was born with a hearing impairment, and my family experienced trials in diagnosing her, treating her and ensuring she had proper resources and education. I realized it is easy to take for granted some of the most inherent functions of the body like hearing, swallowing and breathing. I am pursuing a career in otolaryngology, and I want to help eliminate similar barriers for future patients. I am especially passionate about helping underserved populations.

Three songs on my playlist:

  • “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac
  • “Ivy” by Frank Ocean
  • “Your Song” by Rita Ora

My favorite study snack is:
Peanut butter on bananas OR popcorn

My favorite app is:
Chipotle ordering app – there is nothing better than walking to the front of the line to get your burrito.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I graduated as an English literature major, and when I was growing up I wanted to be a fiction writer. I still love to write.
  • I used to perform in piano competitions, and now I love to sing and play piano with my sisters.
  • The mountains are my happy place! Recently, I climbed the tallest mountain in Colorado.
