UNK leaders tour UNMC, UNO

A leadership delegation from the University of Nebraska at Kearney recently toured UNMC, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM).

UNK Chancellor Douglas Kristensen, J.D., said the Omaha retreat, featuring his senior administration, is an effort to build on already strong bonds with UNMC.

“We have a great relationship with the medical center,” the chancellor said. “Our experience with the Health Science Education Complex has been great. Now, we’re interested in the next big thing.

“Understanding what UNMC’s big thing is can help inform us what our next big thing will be.”

The UNK leaders met with the Global Center for Health Security and the National Strategic Research Institute; they toured the iEXCEL visualization hub and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center; they met with UNMC leaders on rural health; and met with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

The next day, the UNK leaders toured USSTRATCOM at Offutt Air Force Base and the Community Engagement Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Chancellor Kristensen said the visit is only part of what will be an ongoing effort to collaborate with other parts of the University of Nebraska system.

“There’s a great benefit to doing that,” he said, and in doing it on a personal level, going to other campuses, rather than relying on websites or brochures.

“It makes a strong university even stronger,” he said.
