Dr. Poole receives first Clinical and Educational Mentoring Award

Jill Poole, M.D, professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Allergy, has received the department’s 2017 Clinical and Educational Mentoring Award.

She is the first to receive the new award, which recognizes excellence in mentorship of a mentee, support of academic output of a mentee and involvement in recruiting a mentee.

Shannon Boerner, M.D., director of faculty mentoring and development in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, said the department held a mentoring faculty recognition luncheon recently to honor 33 mentors and mentees as part of the 2016-17 New Faculty Mentoring Program.

Dr. Poole’s mentee, Sara May, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Allergy, nominated Dr. Poole for the award.

“We have monthly meetings focused on research in addition to our mentorship meeting for other arenas such as clinical care and education,” Dr. May said. “Her door is always open and every time I enter her office, I receive great advice. Positively impacting the newest generation of our colleagues ensures the continued growth and development of the department.”

Dr. Poole said she was very touched and surprised to receive the award.

“Throughout my life, I have had strong role models and mentors that have supported me through the various twists and turns in my career pathway, to which I am extremely grateful,” Dr Poole said. “In turn, when I see that inner drive in others who are looking to me for mentorship or guidance, I will prioritize my time and efforts toward helping them to the best of my ability.

“Seeing these individuals succeed is extremely rewarding. I have now had some of the most talented students/residents come back to UNMC and work with me to build an energetic allergy practice here.”
