Med center shows holiday spirit with Adopt-a-Family
When it comes to giving, Nebraska Medicine and UNMC colleagues know how to do it well. This year, 74 departments adopted 78 families as part of the Adopt-a-Family program.

“Every family we knew of in need was matched with a department,” said Cyndi Valeika, administrative assistant in the Nebraska Medicine Department of Social Work.

“It was not uncommon for departments to adopt more than one family,” she said. “Many departments will tell us they can do more, so we assign them additional families.”

Two of the families adopted were large families who lived together.

“They were so grateful,” she said. “We had to help carry all of the gifts to their vehicle. They were in shock.”

Another family said the “gifts helped them immensely and every gift was perfect.”

“Every year it gets even bigger,” Valeika said. “It was a great success.”
