In recognition of Black History Month, Eric Ewing, will give a presentation on “The History and Origins of Artifacts – Great Plains Black History Museum,” at noon on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Durham Research Center, Room 1006.

UNMC’s Black History Month Planning Committee would like to offer its gratitude to the following partners, for their efforts in making Black History Month a success at UNMC:

  • Music as Medicine, for donating the piano for “Gospel Fest”;
  • Sodexo for serving soul food at two on-campus cafeterias twice during the month of February;
  • the UNMC Department of Public Relations for advertising throughout the campus; and
  • Inclusive Communities for its partnership in the Table Talk Main Event in recognition of Black History Month.

A collection of artifacts from the museum will be on display during the event.

Tthe Great Plains Black History Museum, located at 2221 N. 24th St. in Omaha, is one of 81 museums nationally focused on African-American history, and is the only museum in Nebraska focused on the history of African-Americans.

The museum’s mission is “To preserve, celebrate and educate all people of the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout the great plains of America.”

Ewing’s presentation will offer information about the museum and how it connects to and recounts Omaha’s black history.

February also is the Great Plains Black History Museum’s annual membership drive. Membership materials will be available at the presentation.

Annual membership cost is:

  • Students/senior citizens (older than 60): $10
  • Single membership: $20
  • Family membership: $40
  • Business membership/sponsorship: $100
  • Sustaining membership: $500

The Great Plains Black History Museum is open to the public at no charge from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
