UNMC hosts continuing education event for pharmacy technicians
UNMC hosted its first continuing-education event for pharmacy technicians Feb. 9, welcoming more than 100 pharmacy techs from across the state for a pharmacy technician professionalism seminar. The techs went through a half-day series of sessions conducted by clinical- and retail-pharmacy professionals, as well as UNMC faculty. Ally Dering-Anderson, Pharm.D., Charles Krobot, Pharm.D., and Judith Neville, UNMC director of pharmacy technician education, were among the presenters.
Former FBI agent to speak at UNMC on sex trafficking
Student-led Legacy Project EMPOWER is hosting a presentation, “Preventing Sex Trafficking in Nebraska,” from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. Anna Brewer, former FBI agent, will present and will discuss the prevalence of human trafficking in Nebraska and how health care professionals can identify signs that someone is being trafficked. EMPOWER is a student-led Legacy project supported by the Office of Community Engagement within Academic Affairs.
Med center to host visiting chef from The Netherlands
On Feb. 19, the Nebraska and Clarkson Cafes will host Sodexo’s Jan Willem Vlijm, a visiting chef from The Netherlands, who will prepare and serve foods from his native country.
Vlijm works as a chef for University College Utrecht, an international honors college in The Netherlands. He has been a chef for more than 30 years in restaurants and hotels. Chef Vlijm’s menu items will include: crispy southwestern salad with chicken (action station); baked salmon with leek mashed potatoes, zucchini and goat cheese quiche and winter beef stew (entree section); and fried cod nuggets with remoulade (grill section).
Buffett Institute seeking fellowship applicants
The Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska is accepting applications from advanced doctoral students within the university system for 1-year fellowships worth up to $25,000.
The Buffett Early Childhood Institute Graduate Scholars program awards grants to a maximum of four doctoral students every year. The program, which was launched two years ago, is designed to foster the growth of diverse, exceptional graduate students conducting research that has implications for early childhood, with particular attention to children placed at risk as a consequence of economic, social, and environmental circumstances. Applications from students working on early development in any doctoral program in the NU system are welcome.
The Buffett Institute Graduate Scholars program is the first financial support program for doctoral students who have reached Ph.D. candidacy at the University of Nebraska that focuses solely on the first years of life.
To increase the diversity of perspectives in research on young children, the Buffett Institute encourages applications from scholars from historically disadvantaged or underrepresented groups, including individuals of color, first-generation college graduates, and individuals from low-income communities.
Scholars will work with their faculty mentors on a dissertation that represents an in-depth exploration of early childhood-related research. The Institute will create opportunities for scholars and mentors to communicate, network, and collaborate with one another.
Full applications from applicants for 2018-19 are due on March 30. The 2018-19 award winners will be announced by the end of June.
