Jarrod Dye, M.D.
Jarrod Dye, M.D., a third-year house officer in Internal Medicine and provider at Nebraska Medicine – Midtown, died unexpectedly Wednesday.

“At this difficult time, we would like to offer our prayers and convey our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends and colleagues on campus,” said Chandra Are, M.B.B.S., associate dean of Graduate Medical Education. “This is a grave loss to the house officer community and for everyone in graduate medical education, as well as the entire UNMC/Nebraska Medicine family.”

Dr. Are called house officers the backbone of academic health care systems, such as ours. “House officers are one of the hardest working professions in the nation,” he said. “Dr. Dye will be missed.”

“Jarrod was a terrific physician, respected by his peers and loved by his patients,” said James O’Dell, M.D, residency program director for internal medicine. “He was always one of the first to step up to help colleagues. The Department of Internal Medicine and particularly all of Jarrod’s colleagues are grieving his death.”

“The UNMC community is highly focused on the wellness and resiliency of our Med Center family,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose lives have been touched by Jarrod, and particularly to his family.”

Dr. Are encourages faculty, staff and students experiencing difficulties to use the available resources (see sidebar at right).

Dr. Dye’s funeral will be in his hometown of Kennett, Mo. There will be a local memorial service, as well, at UNMC. Details of both will be announced later.

Practical tips
This is an important time for all in our community to look out for one another. The following can help people as they grieve:

  • Getting enough sleep.
  • Eating enough food.
  • Talking about grief, memories of your colleague and friend.
  • Checking in with one another.
  • Hugging your loved ones.
  • Taking time to reflect.
