Med center has state’s only JCAHO certified stroke center

The Nebraska Medical Center’s stroke program has received the “Gold Seal of Approval” from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) making it the first and only nationally certified stroke center in Nebraska.

“This is a great achievement for us and great news to stroke patients, their families and physicians,” said Pierre Fayad, M.D., medical director of the stroke center at The Nebraska Medical Center and professor and chairman of UNMC’s Department of Neurological Sciences. “It demonstrates everyone’s commitment to excellence in treating and caring for stroke patients.”

The JCAHO reviewer, in her evaluation of the program, said, “the commitment by the stroke team to reduce stroke and disability from stroke within Nebraska and surrounding states is evident throughout the program.”

Deborah Istas, executive director of neurological sciences at The Nebraska Medical Center, said, “that third party validation is important for patients, their families and physicians when considering where to have their patients or loved ones go for stroke care.”
