Beginning at the end of April, construction will begin on the Orange Parking garage (Lot 1), located just east of Clarkson Tower at Nebraska Medical Center.
This will allow for significant enhancements to the parking lot including new stairwells and better lighting, as well as other safety and structural improvements.
“Our goal to provide our patients and staff with the best experience possible, from the moment they arrive,” said Erin Peters, facilities project management senior analyst. “The time has come for renovations to Lot 1 and we’re looking forward to the improvements that the project will bring.”
Valet parking will continue to be offered for patients at Lot 1 during construction, while visitor will be relocated across the street to the Yellow Parking (Lot 5) garage.
To make room for patient parking, colleagues who currently park in Lot 5 will instead park in the new Lot 6 garage directly to the east until construction is complete. They will begin parking in their temporary lots beginning Monday, April 23. Colleagues who park in the lower level of the South Tower lot will experience adjustments to the entrance and exit to of South Tower lot during the construction project. Wayfinding signs will be posted for assistance.

“We purposely timed the construction to coincide with summer break, when we have fewer students on the UNMC/Nebraska Medical Center campus to support temporary parking relocations,” Peters said. “Additionally, construction crews and individuals who are parking a little farther from the main entrance won’t be impacted by winter weather. There’s never a convenient time for such a project, but we did try to reduce impacts as much as possible.”
Communication to patients regarding the construction and resulting parking changes will be provided through NebraskaMed.com, Patient Access Services, the Medical Call Center and One Chart-Patient. If you work directly with patients who are impacted by the Lot 1 construction, encourage them to use valet services or park in Lot 5 (Yellow Parking).
