Below, three 40-year colleagues and one 30-year colleague share their favorite UNMC memories.

Rick Reinhardt, D.D.S., Ph.D., the Moran Professor of Periodontology, College of Dentistry
“It has been a genuine pleasure to see former students and junior faculty mature into respected clinicians and highly productive academics. A consortium of these leaders, along with current students and residents, have developed a specialized clinic to combine clinical care and research for periodontal inflammation control and regeneration.”

Reed Peters, M.D., professor of anesthesiology, College of Medicine
“My most rewarding experience at UNMC was organizing and directing the Midwest Anesthesiology Conference in 1987 and 2002 in Omaha. This conference involves 36 Midwest residency programs including one from Canada and one from New York. Five hundred faculty members, residents and medical students attended with many of the residents presenting abstracts involving their cases and their research.

“One of my favorite memories was mentoring M1 externs for one or two weeks each summer and then watching them return for an elective in anesthesiology during their M4 year. Many of these students have pursued a career in anesthesiology with several becoming partners in my academic practice.”

Lani Zimmerman, Ph.D.

Keith Allen, Ph.D.

Lani Zimmerman, Ph.D., professor, College of Nursing Lincoln Division
“My most rewarding experience at UNMC was becoming involved in the Mentored Scholars Program in 2007. It has been a privilege for me to work with young bright faculty members across all disciplines and watch them develop their programs of research. I was honored by my peers in 2016 by receiving the UNMC Outstanding Mentor of Junior Faculty Award. It has been amazing to watch the medical center and the College of Nursing, with its five campuses, grow and expand to a premier academic health science medical center.”

Keith Allen, Ph.D., director of psychology, Munroe-Meyer Institute
“As director of our psychology internship at MMI for 30 years, I have very much enjoyed the relationships with interns, some of which have grown into long-term collegial relationships with those who stayed and joined our faculty at MMI as well as many others who moved on, but have remained good friends.”
