Nebraska Medicine puts new job shadowing process in place

Nebraska Medicine, including the hospital and clinics, has put a new process in place for job shadow requests.

The Nebraska Medicine Office of Health Professions Education (OHPE) has developed a process within Apollo, its Learning Management System, which allows interested persons to self-register for such an experience.

Learners outside of UNMC, Clarkson College or Nebraska Medicine, interested in job shadowing at Nebraska Medicine’s hospital and clinics should direct job shadow requests to www.NebraskaMed.com/jobshadow. Information about the program and the online application process to job shadow can be found there. People wanting to job shadow must view a safety and compliance module and complete a short quiz on the material.

Here are a few specific points about the Nebraska Medicine job-shadowing program:

  • Participants must be 16 years of age.
  • Interested persons are allowed three job shadow experiences per year.
  • The actual shadow is a two to four-hour observation-only experience.
  • There are areas within the hospital that are prohibited from hosting job shadows. (Please refer to the job shadow policy for details or contact us by email.

These processes have been implemented to ensure patient and colleague safety, without impeding valuable learning opportunities for persons considering a health career.

The new process streamlines workflow and makes job shadowing accessible for the learner and Nebraska Medicine/UNMC colleagues.

“By creating a scheduling template in Apollo for the Job Shadow Program, it has tremendously helped to streamline the process,” said Jolene Horihan, radiology lead technologist, diagnostic radiology. “Scheduling a candidate before was an arduous process that required a lot of back-and-forth communications between myself, the OHPE staff, and the job shadow candidate. I greatly appreciate having a one-stop shop for job shadow scheduling. The time it will save everyone is invaluable.”

The Nebraska Medicine Human Resource Department also offers a “Be Extraordinary with Us” program for high school students to participate in staged interactive experiences in areas that are not available for job shadows, such as an operating room. This program is available through a self-registration process via the Be Extraordinary webpage.
