VR Innovation Academy application deadline is May 18

An open house is planned Tuesday, May 15, at UNMC for individuals interested in developing specialized skills and obtaining industry certification* in one of the fastest growing technology sectors of the economy — augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR).

About iEXCEL

The Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL) is a transformative project at UNMC designed to distinguish Nebraska by creating a new model for education, training and research for health care professionals using experiential learning and visualization and simulation technologies.

A new EON Reality VR Innovation Academy (VRIA) in Omaha will be launched on June 4. This course will provide the underpinnings for developing 3-D and AR/VR content including coding and project management.

With openings for up to 20 students, eligible candidates will be highly motivated with an aptitude for developing creative digital content. A degree in computer science, gaming, visual arts or similar is ideal, but not required. Recruitment is now underway, and qualified candidates accepted into the inaugural year will receive a tuition waiver.

Prospective applicants are invited to attend the open house to learn more about the AR/VR program, how the technology is being used at UNMC, and how the AR/VR course will help build experience in this growing field.

EON Reality VRIA students will learn the basics of AR/VR content creation and the different specialties required to create a complete experience. The total program is divided into two sections — 16 weeks of theoretical and practical training, and 33 weeks of project-based training.

Students will learn from EON Reality’s AR/VR professionals and develop a portfolio that can be used to showcase their work. Academy students will assist in the creation of content for industry and corporate collaborators, as well as medical content for UNMC’s iEXCEL (Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning) program.

The academy will be housed at UNMC in the Williams Science Hall, Room 2003, and will operate in collaboration with the iEXCEL Visualization Hub. In 2019, the academy will move to the newly opened Dr. Edwin Davis & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning on the UNMC campus.

Tuesday’s open house is from 5 to 7 p.m. in UNMC’s Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, iEXCEL Visualization Hub (Room 1012).
