Small fire quickly extinguished on campus

Members of the UNMC community Tuesday afternoon may have seen smoke rising from the Dr. Edwin Davis & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning construction site.

During a welding operation on the east side of the facility, fire blankets — in place in accordance with safety regulations — were moved by high wind, and welding slag fell onto the foundation insulation. This insulation caught fire and was the cause of smoke seen from the campus.

The fire was extinguished by the construction team, which then contacted the Omaha Fire Department (OFD) to ensure that the fire was completely out. OFD confirmed the fire was out and exited the site.
