Orthopaedic resident graduation events Friday

The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will recognize four graduating residents Friday.

The graduating residents and their chosen fellowships are:

  • Leonid Grossman, M.D.: Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh
  • Sayfe Jassim, M.D.: Adult Reconstructive Fellowship, The CORE Institute, Phoenix
  • Benjamin Ogden, M.D.: Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship, Florida Orthopaedic Institute, Tampa
  • Noah Porter, M.D.: Spine Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh

This year’s graduation ceremony, which is open to the campus, will include final oral presentations from the graduating residents and talks from prominent guest speakers including:

Seventh Annual Harold and Marian Andersen Lecturer
Mary Whyte, internationally-recognized American watercolor artist, will speak at 10:15 a.m. Friday on “Living Your Best Creative Life.” Whyte is the 2016 recipient of the Portrait Society of America’s Gold Medal, the highest honor awarded by the society. She presents her watercolor painting of contemporary realism and portraiture in museums exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally.

Visiting professor
Evan Flatow, M.D., will present “Controversies in Shoulder Replacement” at 11:05 a.m. Friday. Dr. Flatow is the president of Mount Sinai West in New York City and professor of orthopaedics. He is a renowned shoulder surgeon with particular interest in minimally invasive fracture repair, arthroscopic repair, arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery, and shoulder replacement. One of his most significant contributions has been the development of a comprehensive shoulder replacement system, which is widely used by shoulder surgeons around the world.

Friday’s graduation events will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center’s fourth floor auditorium. The schedule of events will be:

  • 7:30-8:30 a.m. – Resident presentations
  • 8:30-9:15 a.m. – Faculty presentations
  • 9:15-10:15 a.m. – Alumni updates and break
  • 10:15-11:05 a.m. – Mary Whyte, “Living Your Best Creative Life”
  • 11:05 a.m.-noon – Evan Flatow, M.D. “Controversies in Shoulder Replacement”
