A pediatric resident researcher is looking for healthy blood donors to give a little extra blood (less than a teaspoon) for heavy metal testing at the upcoming blood drive on Friday, June 22, in Lower Storz Pavilion from 7 a.m.-noon. The study is targeting adult blood donors who live in Omaha’s Superfund site (ZIP codes: 68102, 68104, 68105, 68106, 68107, 68108, 68110, 68111, 68112, 68131, and 68132). UNMC hosts high school students at State Science Experience
Forty-two eighth-grade students from 23 schools across Nebraska attended the 26th annual State Science Experience June 8 at the UNMC. The meet is hosted by the Nebraska Area Health Education Program Office.

The goal of the event is to inspire students, especially those from rural communities, to pursue careers in health care by providing a fun and educational experience.

The students qualify for the event by submitting science projects in one of seven regional science meets, sponsored by the Nebraska Area Health Education Centers and the Coalition for Life Saving Cures, held earlier in the year.

While on campus, students were exposed to the health professions, medical research and patient care. Events included:

  • Exposure to a variety of health science disciplines through hands-on activities;
  • Simulation activities with the SIM-NE truck; and
  • Team development and leadership activities at the Omaha Outward Bound School.

The students also were treated to a biomechanics workshop and CAPOW! science show at the Peter Kiewit Institute on the University of Nebraska at Omaha Scott Campus.
