Bridge to Care, a University of Nebraska Medical Center student-led interprofessional organization focused on refugee health, is hosting its annual summer Refugee Health Fair in conjunction with World Refugee Day. The health fair will be on Saturday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Art Museum.
UNMC students representing all colleges, alongside 22 community vendors, will volunteer at the health fair to provide health education, screenings and services to an expected 400-500 refugees in the Omaha area. The refugees hail from countries such as the Sudan, Somali, Karen and Bhutan.
Free services will include vision, dental, body mass index, blood pressure and glucose level screenings. Community vendors include Creighton Family Medicine Residency Clinic, Creighton University Dental, One World, Charles Drew, Methodist Hospital, Methodist College, United Health Care, Douglas County Health Department and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Bridge to Care, supported by the UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities, also will offer volunteers a one-hour refugee cultural orientation with Michaela Dei, refugee health liaison for Lutheran Family Services.
