iEXCEL highlights free lecture series at KANEKO

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., and Pamela Boyers, Ph.D., will kick off the KANEKO Visionary Series on this Wednesday, June 20, with a look at how UNMC is transforming the model for health professions education, training and research through the creation of iEXCEL.

The panel discussion, titled “Transforming Health Professions Education through Simulated and Virtual ‘Realities,'” will run from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at KANEKO, 1111 Jones St., in Omaha. The event is free and open to the public.

The unique lecture series is part of KANEKO’s Reality season, which features UNMC’s iEXCEL program. The series will examine the interdisciplinary approach to blending science, technology and art and how it transforms human performance and effectiveness in health care.

The free lecture series includes the following presentations:

  • July 30 – “Virtual Reality: Transforming Future Medical Education & Research” from 6-7 p.m. – Joseph Siu, Ph.D., associate professor in the division of physical therapy education at UNMC, and Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology at UNMC, will uncover the impact of virtual reality in medicine and explore the utility of simulation to transform the future of medical education and clinical research.
  • Aug. 6 – “CAE at the Heart of Simulation-Based Training: From Aviation Safety to Patient Safety” from 6 to 7 p.m. – Robert Amyot, M.D., president of CAE Healthcare, will discuss how simulation technology is advancing patient safety.
  • Aug. 13 – “Workplace Transformation for an Interdisciplinary and Mobile Culture of New Age Workers” from 6-7 p.m. – Millennials are the largest generation in today’s workplace representing a mobile, digitally social, remotely collaborative culture. Because of this, organizations are changing how they attract top talent through the transformation of new enterprise technology platforms and physical workplaces. Joe Laezza of AVI-SPL will share key trends that are helping organizations visualize a new reality to work, grow and prosper.
  • Aug 27 – “Simulation: A Window on Mind and Brain Health” from 6-7 p.m. – The Mind & Brain Health Lab at UNMC studies how humans behave when interacting with technology in-the-lab and in-the-field with a focus on mobility and cognition. Matthew Rizzo, M.D., chair of the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences and director of the Mind & Brain Health Initiative, will discuss how simulation and research has developed intervention techniques to improve health, mobility and quality of life in individuals of all ages.
  • Sept. 14 – “How and Why Augmented and Virtual Reality (AVR) is Changing our World” from 6-7 p.m.- Mats Johansson, co-founder and president of EON Reality will discuss how AVR technology is changing our world. EON Reality is the world’s leading virtual reality and augmented reality based knowledge transfer for industry and education.
