Scott Smith, Ph.D., has joined the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Human Genetics Laboratory as an associate director. He also will serve as an assistant professor of MMI at UNMC.

Dr. Smith completed his Ph.D. from the University of Louisville. After working as a postdoctoral research fellow at Emory University and The University of Louisville School of Dentistry, he completed fellowships in clinical cytogenetics and clinical molecular genetics and genomics at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and is board-eligible in both subspecialties through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).

“Scott is a great addition to our team,” said MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D. “His expertise and personality are both great assets to MMI and UNMC, and we are looking forward to seeing him grow.”

Dr. Smith said he was well aware of the Human Genetics Laboratory at UNMC because of its excellent reputation.

“I am honored to be involved with the laboratory and eager to contribute to its clinical, educational and research activities,” Dr. Smith said. “My family and I are keen to be calling Nebraska home.”

Human Genetics Laboratory Director Jennifer Sanmann, Ph.D., said that she and the team are eager to welcome Dr. Smith to the laboratory.

“The recruitment process, which began over a year ago, was centered on finding an individual with top-notch training and clinical expertise in both cytogenetics and molecular genetics. After meeting Dr. Smith, we are incredibly fortunate to have also found a colleague whose approach to our profession and to patient care fit seamlessly with our mission and storied tradition,” she said. “We look forward to working with Dr. Smith and are excited to see his contributions further elevate our laboratory’s clinical and academic services.”
