Following a national search, Doug Ewald has been named the new vice chancellor for business, finance and business development for the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

Ewald, who has extensive administrative and financial experience, will assume the role Aug. 1, pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Ewald will serve as senior business officer on both campuses, advising Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., and overseeing all budget, finance, operational and administrative services.

"We are tremendously pleased to welcome Mr. Ewald to UNO and UNMC," Dr. Gold said. "His considerable financial experience and expertise will be an asset to both campuses as we continue to operate strategically and efficiently, plan for campus growth, and innovate to further grow Nebraska's economy."

The UNO/UNMC business and finance units have approximately 600 employees. The position also will be responsible for all business development activities for UNO and UNMC. These responsibilities include administrative leadership of a broad spectrum of business development, such as UNeMed, as well as core university finances.

"I am thrilled to take on this new challenge," Ewald said. "Few organizations can claim a larger impact on our state’s economic wellbeing than UNO and UNMC. I look forward to joining the leadership team of the universities, working with both campus communities to not only continue optimizing operations, but also foster business development in our community, our state and across the region."

Ewald comes to the new position with nearly 30 years of administrative experience at such companies as Union Pacific, KPMG and Ameritas. Appointed by Gov. Dave Heineman, he also served as tax commissioner for the State of Nebraska from December 2006 to October 2013. A UNO alumnus, Ewald graduated with an MPA in accounting in 1987.

The selection was made following recommendations by a search committee made up of 23 representatives from both campuses’ students, faculty, staff and administrators.

"I’m very pleased to welcome Mr. Ewald to UNO and UNMC," said Don Leuenberger, interim vice chancellor for business and finance for UNO and UNMC and chair of the search committee. "Doug’s enthusiasm, knowledge and business experience will serve us well in supporting the university’s mission and service to Nebraska."
