EngAge Wellness offering August specials
EngAge Wellness, located in the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging at UNMC, is offering a “back-to-school” discount for those who join in August. EngAge Wellness is a medical-fitness/whole-person wellness center. Each participant receives an individualized fitness program to meet their specific fitness level & health status. Stop by for a tour of the facility at 730 S. 38th Ave. For those who join in August, there is a one-time enrollment fee of $18 (regularly $75) or an $18 August participation fee (regularly $49).
UNMC hosting informational session on Clinical Scholars program
On Aug. 21 from noon-1 p.m., UNMC will host an informational reception on the Clinical Scholars at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
There also will be an information session from 4:30-6 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the Magnolia Hotel, 1615 Howard St., Omaha.
Clinical Scholars is a national leadership program for health care professionals with at least five years of clinical experience. Current awardees are health care professionals in audiology, dentistry, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and social work. Applications from health care professionals who are working collaboratively across disciplines to tackle complex health issues are welcome. See current teams and their projects here.

Library receives outstanding service award
Recently, the McGoogan Library of Medicine received the Outstanding Service to the Allied Health Professions Award from the College of Allied Health Professions. The award recognizes extraordinary contributions in health care, education or service that result in the significant advancement of the college and the allied health professions.
One nominator said, “It is difficult to find a faculty and staff that works so hard and is as dedicated to the mission of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Having the understanding of current practice in learning, education and assessment allows the library to provide services to all stakeholders.” Other nominators noted the library’s involvement in technologies, such as 3D printing and the DigitalCommons repository, and promotion of scholarly activity.
Dr. Shiffermiller’s paper makes Hospitalist’s top five list
Jason Shiffermiller, M.D., assistant professor of general internal medicine, recently was published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine on a new approach to perioperative management of ACE Inhibitor medications. The paper also made the Hospitalist Top Five list the week of July 23. The article is about angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). ACEIs are a commonly used medication for high blood pressure.
“We found that the risk of suffering very low blood pressure during surgery was higher if ACEIs were continued right up until the operation. In the process of planning for a surgery, patients taking ACEIs should discuss how and when to take them with their physicians,” Dr. Shiffermiller said. “Physicians may instruct patients to stop taking ACEIs for a short time before surgery.”
