Public Affairs expands campus news Web site

The Public Affairs department has expanded and enhanced the UNMC news and publications Web site to include a “press room” for the media, an image gallery with downloadable photos and a number of other additions.

The site, posted in late May, also features a new home page, a list of contacts for the Public Affairs department, and information on scheduling campus tours, said Theresa Cassiday, Web/online communications coordinator.

“We wanted to create a place on our Web site where the media could come and find everything they need for their news reports,” Cassiday said. “We also wanted to add and highlight much-requested information to make it easier for the UNMC campus and the public to find exactly what they need.”

Users can get to the site by clicking on the News link in the top navigation bar on any UNMC Web page. The direct link is https://app1.unmc.edu/publicaffairs/newsarchive/.

In addition to news releases and a list of news conferences, the media site includes:

  • Instructions on setting up an interview with UNMC faculty, staff and students.
  • A press kit with links to UNMC’s history and mission, and links to bios and photos of the chancellor and vice chancellors.
  • A list of experts available for interviews in their areas of expertise.
  • A subscription form so members of the media can receive news releases via e-mail.

The image gallery includes two pages of thumbnail images that represent full-sized photographs that can be downloaded from the Web site. The images can be saved in jpeg format for use on the Web, or in tiff format for print publications, Cassiday said.

“Our thanks go to Teonne Daye, Web developer in the Department of Internal Medicine,” Cassiday said. “She contributed many of the photos in the gallery, including the two panorama shots.”

Images of Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., the vice chancellors and UNMC’s six deans also are available for download in the “People” section of the image gallery. The gallery also has a page with information on using and downloading UNMC logos.

“Chancellor Maurer is committed to making UNMC a world-class academic health sciences center,” said Tom O’Connor, senior associate director in public affairs. “One important way of doing this is by increasing our exposure in the national media. The new Web site offers many features, which will be user-friendly to national media. We think it can only enhance our abilities to tell the UNMC story through the media.”

Other highlights of the site include:

  • The community relations section, where information is provided on how to set up a tour of UNMC, and how to book a speaker from the UNMC speakers bureau for community meetings and events.

  • A new search function so users can search the news release archive by keyword.

  • A list of contacts for the Public Affairs department.

  • Links to UNMC publications such as UNMC Today, UNMC Discover and RHEN Focus.

  • Links to related sites on fetal cell and stem cell research, UNMC radio advertising campaigns, campus maps and the UNMC calendar.
