Bradley Reames, M.D.

Bradley Reames, M.D., is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Bradley Reames, M.D.
  • Hometown: I grew up in a small town in southeast Michigan, 30 miles south of Ann Arbor, Mich., and just north of Toledo, Ohio
  • Title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology

Research/professional interests:
I have many diverse research interests. I am keenly interested in regional variations in the utilization of surgery and strategies to reduce unwarranted variations. I also am very interested in regional variations in clinical practice and post-operative outcomes, and efforts to reduce those variations through regional and systematic quality improvement and health policy initiatives. In addition, I thoroughly enjoy teaching students and residents in all health professions. My clinical interests include pancreatic cancer, biliary malignancy, hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery, and soft tissue sarcoma.

How I fell in love with medicine:
I grew up around medicine, as my father is a family practice physician and my mother is a nurse. Every time I was out in public with my dad, we would inevitably meet some of his patients. In observing their interactions, it became very clear to me how much his patients meant to him, and how much his patients valued his kindness and care. From those early moments, I knew I wanted to become a doctor and impact people’s lives the same way he did.

During my surgical residency, I quickly realized I was destined to become a surgical oncologist. I love surgical oncology because it gives me the opportunity to cure cancer, which I believe is the most rewarding and fulfilling service any doctor can provide a patient. I also really enjoy the opportunity to practice complex and nuanced multidisciplinary and personalized care with colleagues from many different specialties. In the operating room, I love surgical oncology because every patient, and every case, is unique and challenging in its own way.
