Dr. Needelman presents research findings at national meeting
Howard Needelman, M.D., of the MMI Department of Developmental Medicine, presented a poster at the Society of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics meeting in Anaheim, Calif., in September. Titled “Variations in Criteria for Eligibility Determination for Early Childhood Intervention Services across the United States,” it was a collaboration with researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
Children qualify for early intervention (EI) services by demonstrating a deficit in an area of development. The purpose of the study is to describe policy data on eligibility determination practices for EI services across the US. The presentation highlighted variations in (a) definition of delay; (b) approved assessment tools for eligibility determination; (c) qualifying diagnoses based on gestational age/birth weight; and (d) whether testing from outside the EI agency is accepted.
MMI’s Hoffman receives Berndt Graduate Student Travel Award
Rashelle Hoffman, graduate research assistant in the lab of Max Kurz, Ph.D., was awarded a Berndt Graduate Student Travel Award. Established to commemorate the life of William O. Berndt, Ph.D., former dean of graduate studies and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNMC, the Berndt Graduate Student Travel Award provides recipients with reimbursement for travel and other expenses related to presenting research at national or international conferences.
