Legislative candidate Tom Brandt, running in the 32nd District, toured UNMC in September.

It was the first visit to UNMC for Brandt, whose district encompasses Saline, Fillmore, Jefferson, Thayer and part of Lancaster counties. He toured the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the iExcel Visualization Hub and met with UNMC leaders.

Brandt, whose father battled cancer, said the university system and UNMC were important to the state of Nebraska.

“Most of the people in my district are anywhere from 50 to 150 miles away, but they’ll drive to the med center for specialized care,” he said.

Brandt, a fourth-generation local farmer and livestock feeder from Plymouth, said he supports the university system and is a University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been to UNMC and it’s all impressive,” he said. “It’s an economic driver, these are good jobs, and we’re leading the nation in several categories – cancer research, treating infectious diseases. People like to know their university is on the cutting edge.”
