How I fell in love with surgery:

I had always known I wanted to be a physician, but it wasn’t until I was a third-year medical student that I decided to become a surgeon. I was helping to care for a lady with a small bowel obstruction caused by a retained foreign body from a previous surgery. The patient was clearly in agony and had been shuffled between multiple doctors, not having her problem taken seriously. What was striking to me was the impact her surgeon made by listening to her and then appropriately intervening. Her suffering had been relieved with an operation, and she was on the road to healing. I knew then that surgery was the field of medicine I wished to dedicate myself to.
