Changes being made in how we call colleagues

For years, med center employees have been used to dialing five digits when calling colleagues. However, due to the growth of the organization, 10-digit telephone dialing is being implemented across the Nebraska Medicine and UNMC organizations.

“The existing five-digit dialing that many of us have been used to when calling colleagues throughout the organization has outlived its lifespan, due to the continued growth of the organization that spans from Omaha to Scottsbluff,” said Frank Plummer, systems manager, IT Administration. “The growth of having more locations has resulted in overlapping five-digit numbers, thus requiring us to move to a 10-digit dial plan.”

Implementation of 10-digit dialing is under way and continues through the remainder of the fiscal year. University Health Center and the College of Nursing in Lincoln, the College of Nursing in Scottsbluff, the Student Health Center at University of Nebraska at Omaha, and Nebraska Medicine-Grand Island have all undergone the switch.

Below is the estimated times when 10-digit dialing is expected to go live at other locations:

  • December 2018
    • Fontenelle
  • March 2019
    • Clarkson Family Medicine will go live when it moves to its new location.
  • April 2019
    • Midtown
    • Plattsmouth
    • Eagle Run
  • May 2019
    • Bellevue
  • June 2019
    • Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC campus

Until your area has migrated to 10-digit dialing, continue calling colleagues the same way you have. However, once the dialing system change has been made, you will then need to use 10-digit dialing. Notification about the 10-digit internal dialing transition at the above listed areas will come prior to implementation.

Long distance charges will not apply to 10-digit dialing within the campus/organization dial plan. Long distance charges will only apply when callers enter/dial 1+ 10-digits.

“By adopting 10-digit dialing, this will help support our goal of having one telephone network system for the entire Nebraska Medicine and UNMC enterprise, and will allow for future location expansions without having overlapping phone numbers,” said Marc Ferguson, executive director, IT Operations.
