Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Jordan Pieper
  • Hometown: Norfolk, Neb.
  • No. of years at UNMC: Three months

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I am a program coordinator in the telehealth department. My job overall is to help our providers see patients virtually in remote locations. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just giving our provider and their patients a camera. It can be a complicated setup process that requires me to have a hand in many other departments on campus, such as Epic analysts, information security and legal. I’m tasked with ensuring that the patient will receive as high-quality, if not better quality, care by seeing their provider virtually as opposed to an in-person visit that everyone is used to. I also help as a telehealth consultant on larger projects, such as the Regional Health Disaster Network grant and an improved communication technology project in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.

“Innovation” is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us about a time you’ve seen innovation at UNMC.
I’m probably a little biased, but I believe my department can be pointed to as a campus leader in innovation. The section of our building in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center is even called the “Telehealth Innovation Hub.” We know UNMC/Nebraska Medicine has some of the best health care professionals in the world, and by leveraging the use of technology in new ways, we can spread the impact of their care across the entire state, instead of being limited only to those who can transport themselves to our campus.

What is your favorite winter activity?

Quality time with family during the holidays and eating delicious food!

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I recently graduated from the UNMC College of Public Health’s Master’s Program.
  • I’ve formerly worked as an emergency medical technician and have used those skills to regularly volunteer with the Red Cross for more than six years.
  • I love live music! Rock is my favorite genre.
