Feds require new cost transparency website
The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will require all hospitals to publicly post their costs on their public websites beginning Jan. 1. Nebraska Medicine is complying with the regulation and is encouraging any patient with questions about their costs to speak with a financial counselor.

“CMS requires hospitals to post their retail price list, which reflects a price few, if any, patients actually pay,” said Jana Danielson, executive director of Nebraska Medicine’s Revenue Cycle Department. “Because of differences in insurance plans and several other factors, it can be very difficult for someone to estimate their costs based on this published list.”

Nebraska Medicine’s website will seek to eliminate as much confusion as possible by posting the direct phone number to patient financial services, 402-559-5346, and encouraging patients to get their specific information from a counselor rather than the CMS-required listing. The Revenue Cycle team reviewed this approach with several patient family advisory councils, as well as physician and administrative leaders.
