Presentation to discuss unconscious bias

UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha are partnering to present a discussion on Feb. 21 about unconscious bias in the university experience.

Pam Hernandez, founder and president of The Right Reflection, will facilitate a multi-faceted learning experience aimed at mitigating unconscious bias.

“We are excited to be partnering with our UNO colleagues to bring Pam Hernandez to campus for what promises to be a tremendous learning opportunity for our leaders and faculty,” said interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs Kari Simonsen, M.D., one of the organizers of the event. “She is a dynamic speaker, a subject matter expert on unconscious bias, and an organizational leadership development consultant whose expertise has been sought by many prominent businesses and universities across Nebraska. This will be an evening of active engagement with colleagues from UNO and UNMC on this important topic, and the UNO and UNMC communities are invited to join us.”

The event will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 230 of the UNO Community Engagement Center, which is located in the heart of UNO’s 60th and Dodge streets campus.

The presentation will include:

4:30-5 p.m.: Sharing Experiences to Navigate the Future: Open Discussion
Unconscious biases are a part of the human condition – we all have them. There is no shame in having unconscious biases as long as we continually endeavor to be aware of personal or organizational biases and the many shapes and forms of influence they exert in higher education.

5-5:45 p.m.: Uncovering and Mitigating Unconscious Bias in the University Experience.
A focused and thought-provoking research presentation highlighting Hernandez’s work within organizational development and higher education environments.

5:45-6:45 p.m.: Interactive Workshop exploring the effects of unconscious bias in:

  • The recruitment process;
  • The hiring process;
  • Tenure track decisions;
  • Retention and promotion;
  • Family leave;
  • Leadership track;
  • Gendered job expectations; and
  • Resulting financial implications and pay equity.
