Charlene Butts Ligon, a local author, will read from and discuss her book “Fearless” from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 , in the Eppley Science Hall Auditorium as part of UNMC’s observance of Black History Month.

Ligon’s work tells the story of Ligon’s mother, Evelyn Butts, a poor Virginia seamstress who took on Jim Crow laws, beat the poll tax and changed her city forever. Set in Norfolk, Va., the true story provides lessons that can apply to many communities and readers of all ages.

Chuck Robb, former Virginia governor and U.S. senator, called the book “the inside story of the struggle for basic American rights, told from the perspective of those who lived through the oppression and fought for change.”

Ligon, a Bellevue, Neb., resident and a retired Air Force master sergeant, is the chair of the Sarpy County Democratic Party and Secretary of the Nebraska Democratic Party.

Ligon’s book will be available at a 25 percent discounted rate on her website using the coupon code UNMCBHM.

Refreshments will be served at the event.
