Nebraska Science Festival kicks off

The seventh annual Nebraska Science Festival — presented by UNMC — kicks off this week. The month-long festival includes an array of science- and technology-related activities in 20 communities across the state.

With more than 100 SciFest activities, there is something for every age and interest. Participants can become trained weather spotters; visit a fish hatchery; learn about weather, craft beer, constellations and raptors; track a weather balloon; and discover careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). You’ll find the entire festival schedule (with details and registration links) on www.nescifest.com. The following events include representation by UNMC and its affiliates:

UNO STEM University – April 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Experts in STEM education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha will conduct hands-on workshops for students in grades 2-12. Along with the workshops, which require registration, students can move through open interactive stations in Roskens Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nebraska Medicine Nursing Tours

  • Critical and Intensive Care – April 9, 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Pediatrics & Women’s Services – April 22, 1 to 3 p.m.

Teens and adults are invited to tour these units at Nebraska Medicine to better understand our culture, and see first-hand how we deliver upon our promise of Serious Medicine. Extraordinary Care! Meet with hiring managers and staff to ask specific questions.

Earth Day Omaha in Elmwood Park – April 13, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Earth Day is a free showcase for the many charitable, scientific, and educational efforts advocating for sustainable environmental practices and lifestyles. Stop by the SciFest booth, which will be staffed by UNMC employees, UNO students, and SciFest volunteers.

Women in Science: Omaha Science Cafe, “Law, Ethics and Impact of ‘Right to Try Movement’ – April 23, 7 to 8 p.m.
Join the Nebraska Coalition for Livesaving Cures at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. in Omaha, as they welcome Beth E. Roxland, J.D., M.Bioethics, Senior Consultant on Law, Policy and Ethics at Roxland Consultants, Ltd. Free admission.

Free Public Science Expo – April 27, 9 a.m. to noon
Participate in free and engaging hands-on learning opportunities at The Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St. The Omaha Children’s Museum will perform their “Mad Scientist Show” at 10:30 a.m. Participating UNMC booths include iEXCEL, the Human Genetics Lab, SIM-NE, HEROES and Maurice Godfrey, Ph.D., of the Munroe-Meyer Institute, who will do a hands-on, DNA extraction activity with strawberries.

Presented by UNMC, the Nebraska Science Festival is a collaboration of organizations and individuals interested in the advancement of science literacy.
